Golf course sure to boost economy

-

Re: “Course opening elicits flood of emotions,” Eric Francis, May 10.

Kudos for an excellent column by Eric Francis about the reopening of the beautiful 36-hole Kananaskis Country Golf Course.

Incredibly, 19,000 golfers got tee times over the first five days, crashing the website for several hours.

Even if you’re not a golfer, the reopening will be a greatly added economic stimulus to both Calgary and the Banff area from the resulting increase in tourism, especially from the nearby United States, where from an economic standpoint, a 20-per-cent discount on an already very reasonably priced round of golf prevails.

And to add to this good news, the province should be able to recoup all of the money it cost to repair the course from the floods from the federal government.

The province should receive about $450,000 annually from the operations, which certainly would’ve been lost if the current government had not decided to proceed with the renovations.

Bottom line: great boost for tourism and prestige for the province, along with the financial and wage benefits that go with it.
