Scheifele, Stastny both clutch performers

WINNIPEG Jets centres Mark Scheifele and Paul Stastny have etched their names onto the list of all-time Stanley Cup playoff performers.

Scheifele established a record for the most goals on the road in a single series, scoring all seven of his second-round goals in Nashville.

The 25-year-old eclipsed the previous record of six road goals in a series, held by several players, including Sidney Crosby.

Scheifele scored twice in Game 1, added two more in Game 2, scored one in Game 5, then added another pair to help the Jets win Game 7 against the Predators on Thursday.

Stastny, acquired from St. Louis at the trade deadline, added to his reputation as a clutch player with two goals and an assist in Game 7.

Stastny ’s eight points (four goals, four assists) in four career Game 7 appearances place him fourth on the list for active NHL players.

Only Justin Williams (14 points, seven games), Patrice Bergeron (nine in four) and Henrik Zetterberg (nine in five) have more career Game 7 points than Stastny.

“As you get later in your career, you’ve just got to enjoy these moments,” the 32-year-old said. “You’re going to have some guys that get nervous out there and that’s fine. It’s our job, older guys, veteran guys, to go out there and try to be loose and try to make everyone comfortable.”

Stastny certainly has family bragging rights. His eight Game 7 points are more than his father, Peter (five points in five games) and uncles Anton (one in three) and Marian (one in one) combined.

Stastny says he has yet to match the drama of his dad scoring the Game 7 overtime winner to lift the Quebec Nordiques over archrival Montreal in the 1985 Adams Division final. “He still talks about winning that draw.”
