STYLISH AND ROOMY

Size A Priority In Kingston By Excel

- JOSH SKAPIN

When large families are deciding on a new home, certain factors need to be top of mind.

Excel Homes pulls these ideas together in its Kingston model, a 2,404-square-foot front-drive single-family home now displayed as a show home in Mahogany. It’s got a range of sleep spaces. There are four bedrooms on the second level, and another two displayed in the optional developed basement.

The rear-facing master bedroom — which has an eye-catching vaulted ceiling — is 12 feet four inches by 13 feet three inches, and the secondary bedrooms are generouslysized, as well.

Comic book fans will appreciate the Batman theme to the decor in one of the children’s bedrooms, including a Batmobile-inspired bed.

In the master bedroom, the walkin closet is accessed through a spacious ensuite, where dual vanities sit under a full-width mirror and across from a deep soaker tub that sits under a window. There’s also a luxurious shower surrounded in tile that’s closed off by a thick glass door.

Having the closet accessed through the ensuite allows one partner to start their day earlier than the other, with morning routine behind one door, decreasing the chance of being a disruption.

Two of the secondary bedrooms on the second level flank a full bathroom and the other is just a few steps away.

Welcoming gathering spaces are an emphasis on all three storeys, including the bright central bonus room on the second floor, generously-sized rec room in the basement, and open-concept social spaces on the main.

The kitchen has both the design and proportions to stay instep with big family needs. It’s an expansive U-shaped area with a side eating bar that can seat four people, along with a central island.

The space between the island and kitchen features along the wall make it easy for multiple people to either be mobile — grabbing a snack from the fridge or walk-through pantry — or stay put, to lend a hand with preparing the meal.

With the eating bar on the side counter, the island can be strictly functional, providing that central hub for chopping, dicing and seasoning. It also boasts a built-in wine rack that can hold 30 bottles.

The kitchen is also equipped with a large volume of cabinets, full-height tile backsplash, and stainless steel appliances, including a chimney-style hoodfan.

The great room with a fireplace, and dining area sit side-by-side along the rear-facing wall.

As displayed in the show home, the dining area easily fits a table for six, and has the ability to support something larger. To extend the dining experience to the outdoors, this area has a door that steps out to a rear deck.

Speaking of versatility, the flex room also plays an important role. The 10 foot 11 inch by 10 foot two space is located just off the entrance, and has a large cutout facing the foyer that pulls in additional natural light.

It’s staged as a show home, but can serve a variety of purposes, such as an additional sitting area or a children’s play space.

Mahogany is a southeast Calgary community by Hopewell Residential.

At 25 hectares, Mahogany Lake is the largest freshwater lake within city limits.

The community also features 30 hectares of naturalized wetlands, 22 kilometres of pathways and a commercial complex anchored by a Sobeys grocery store.
