Flamenco artist honoured

-

Calgary flamenco artist Rosanna Terracciano has won a prestigious prize for dance from the Canada Council for the Arts.

Terracciano has been a strong advocate of the fiery dance genre. Her persistent efforts resulted in it being included in a number of international festivals. Now, her new film project — a quiet flamenco — caught the attention of adjudicators who selected the winner of the Jacqueline Lemieux Prize. The series of short experimental films, shot and directed by Terracciano, celebrates the often-overlooked, vulnerable and introverted qualities of flamenco dance. The project is the first of its kind to document Canadian flamenco dance through film. The films will be available to view online in the coming months at www.aquietflamenco.com.

“I am humbled by this recognition from my peers,” Terracciano said in a statement. “And I am thrilled for a Calgary artist to now be among the recipients. But I am also so proud that it comes to me through my film project, which showcases the unique and generous flamenco artists from across the country — a national community which has been critical to my sustainability as a solo artist in such a global niche art form after all these years. I feel these artists are collectively lifting me up to receive this honour today.”

Established in 1980, the annual Jacqueline Lemieux Prize recognizes an established dance professional who has made an outstanding contribution to dance in Canada. Recipients receive a $6,000 cash prize.
