Taxi only accepts musical notes

- NICHOLAS MARONESE Driving.ca

A Finnish rock festival has launched the world’s first taxi that runs on singing. As long as you keep belting out tunes, your shuttle keeps moving.

The Turku, Finland-based Ruisrock festival’s brightly coloured Singalong Shuttle, a BMW i3 compact, isn’t actually powered by singing. It’s an electric vehicle that will take singing as its only form of payment. The driver will turn down your credit card or cash, but asks you to carry a melody if you want to get to your destination.

A tablet in the back lets passengers choose their song and shows them the lyrics, karaoke-style.

The decision to use an electric vehicle was made partly so the passenger-vocalists wouldn’t have their solos drowned out by engine noise, says Fortum, a clean energy company and the Singalong Shuttle’s developer. Obviously, the environmental benefits were the other reason for the vehicle choice.

The shuttle will run between the Aurajoki riverbank and Ruisrock festival bus station over the July 6 weekend.
