THERE’S LOTS TO LIKE ON THE MENU AT KILLARNEY

- JOSH SKAPIN

Sophie Belanger is a lover of quality cuisine. So when she was in the market to downsize to a home with dimensions that better suited her current lifestyle, she had her heart set on a neighbourhood that supported her foodie interests.

In the historic southwest Calgary neighbourhood of Killarney, she felt right at home.

Here, Belanger bought a townhome at the award-winning Killarney Townes by StreetSide Developments. The boutique development is comprised of 20 three-storey town houses with charming Craftsman and Tudor designs that boast battens, stucco, stone accents and substantial windows.

Belanger — who moved from a larger single-family home in Garrison Woods and lived in Altadore before that — was pleased with Killarney’s eclectic selection of food stores, supporting a do-ityourself dish, and the established places to dine.

“It’s a foodie’s haven,” said Belanger.

There’s a host of places in the vicinity in which to stop for a high-calibre meal. Among them, Belanger singles out Cassis Bistro, which is walking distance from her new home. Executive chef Dominique Moussu is a “gem,” she said.

“The food he makes ... is from heaven.”

As for her culinary pursuits, looking over a large collection of recipe books, Belanger — who worked as a professional trapeze artist in her 20s — said she’s “aspiring.

“My recipe books are like art books to me,” she said. “I flip pages and think, ‘ Wow, somebody can actually cook this.’ I’m working on it. I have the kitchen for it now.”

She also likes the visuals of her new cooking space, highlighting its “clean lines” as a point of simplicity she appreciates.

From her new home, she’ll also simplify her lifestyle, describing a routine of going to the market every day, “buying one piece of meat, produce and cooking it — then starting over the next day.

“This is what I aim to do. I like that way of living, it’s simpler.”

Beyond Killarney ’s mature amenities is a neighbourhood Belanger calls friendly and “unpretentious.” “I’m happy here,” she said. Down to its final stretch of quick possession options, prices at the Killarney Townes currently start from mid-$500,000s before GST. The remaining floor plans range from 1,708 to 1,724 square feet and have single-car garage.

The development has two town houses staged as show homes for people to explore.

On what stands out about the development to people in the market for a new townhome, Ian Macdonald, StreetSide’s director of marketing and sales said “first, it’s location.”
