Man killed in ‘targeted’ shooting in Edmonton
EDMONTON A 27-year-old man has been identified as the victim of what police believe was a targeted gun attack in Edmonton’s northeast, city police said Monday.
Abdi Latif Hirsi was found dead inside a vehicle shortly before 11 p.m. Sunday in a parking lot outside an apartment building at 162 Avenue and 51 Street, police said in a news release.
Police said they received numerous calls about gunfire in the area. When officers arrived, Hirsi was found inside the vehicle with what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds.
A grey or silver sedan that may have been a Nissan Sentra with multiple people inside was seen leaving the area right after the shooting, police said. It is believed to have sped southbound on 51 Street, then turned westbound onto 162 Avenue.
Officers had pulled down all but a few fragments of police tape from the scene outside the Hollick Kenyon Estates apartment building by 3 p.m. Monday. There was still a small pile of glass and what appeared to be blood on the parking lot pavement.
Staff Sgt. Bill Clark told reporters Monday that the victim was well known to law enforcement.
Police have had “multiple issues” with a group the man associated with.
“There’s no doubt this is a targeted attack — this is a group of individuals involved in criminal activities,” Clark said.
“They were definitely on the police radar.”
A court records check of Hirsi’s name found no charges or convictions in Alberta.
No one has been charged in the case. Both the homicide unit and the drug and gang enforcement unit are investigating.
Police said they are hoping to speak with anyone who has information on the sedan that left the scene and its occupants.
An autopsy for Hirsi has been scheduled for Tuesday.
