Calgary chef, son dead after vehicle hits moose in Ontario

Wife and daughter injured as SUV collides with another SUV after hitting animal

- STEPHANIE BABYCH — With files from The Sault Star.

Two Calgarians were among four people killed in an accident involving a moose in Ontario.

An SUV, southbound on Highway 17 in Lendrum Township about 15 kilometres south of Wawa, Ont., hit a moose at about 10:20 p.m. Sunday.

The vehicle then crossed the centre line and collided with a northbound SUV, Ontario Provincial Police say.

Two occupants in the southbound SUV, Fatos Metko, 45, and Fioralb Metko, 14, of Calgary, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Fatos worked as a chef at Broken Plate Kitchen and Bar in Willow Park for more than nine years, according to owner and executive chef Ervin Bushi.

Bushi said Fatos was the hardest worker.

“All you had to do was ask for help and he wouldn’t say no … He was a good example to all our employees,” said Bushi.

“Him and his wife, both hard workers, working every day in the service industry and restaurant industry, truly trying to give their kids the best. It’s bad to see him go like this.”

Bushi also knew Fioralb, Fatos’ son.

“He was very respectful. He liked sports a lot,” Bushi said of the 14-year-old who also died in the crash.

Two people in the northbound vehicle, Cynthia Caraoa, 51, and Anika Caraoa, 9, of Winnipeg, later died of their injuries in hospital.

Five other people in the two vehicles were sent to hospital with serious injuries.

Bushi said Fatos’s wife, Maralba, and daughter, Brianna, were also in the vehicle, and he’s heard Maralba is still in critical condition.

The family was visiting the province with plans to move there in the coming weeks. They were enrolling the two kids in school and finalizing other moving details.

“They have a lot of family in the U.S., in Michigan, so he wanted to go to Ontario so he would be closer, just a driving distance from them,” said Bushi.

All you had to do was ask for help and he wouldn’t say no … He was a good example to all our employees.
