Argonauts expected to sign Carter on weekend

- Frank Zicarelli

TORONTO Barring some last-minute glitch or setback, it’s all systems go for receiver Duron Carter to join the Toronto Argonauts.

According to sources, an announcement could be made as early as this weekend, which will allow Carter, who is the type of playmaker the Argos could use, to suit up on Labour Day in Hamilton.

The Ticats, interestingly, were also in the running for Carter after the Saskatchewan Roughriders released the explosive receiver/returner, who was asked to play in the defensive backfield in Riderville under head coach Chris Jones.

Much will be made of Carter’s penchant for going off, whether it’s on the field when he’s not being involved, off the field when a microphone gets foisted in his face, or on social media, and whether his demeanour can coexist with a head coach such as Marc Trestman.

Carter, truth be told, could use a coach such as Trestman, who demands discipline and being teamfirst, and there’s no better lockerroom than the culture the Argos have established.

Two of Carter’s former teammates in Montreal, S.J. Green and Bear Woods, have already gone on record as saying how much Carter would enjoy football life as an Argo.

The Argos are also closely watching the fate of DeVier Posey, the Grey Cup MVP who left Toronto in free agency to sign with the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens.
