Bouchard, polan­sky ad­vance in qual­i­fy­ing

Eu­ge­nie Bouchard ad­vanced to the fi­nal round of women’s qual­i­fy­ing at the U.S. Open, while fel­low Cana­dian Peter Polan­sky moved a win away from the men’s main draw. Bouchard, from West­mount, Que., cruised past Ge­or­gia’s Eka­ter­ine Gor­godze 6-1, 6-2 Thurs­day to close in on a berth in the fi­nal Grand Slam tour­na­ment of the year. Bouchard faces Amer­i­can Jamie Loeb Fri­day. Polan­sky, from Thorn­hill, Ont., beat Colom­bia’s San­ti­ago Gi­raldo 7-6 (7), 6-4. Polan­sky faces Amer­i­can Don­ald Young on Fri­day. Mon­treal’s Felix Auger-Alias­sime surged back from down a break in the open­ing set to beat Amer­i­can Christopher Eubanks 7-6 (5), 6-2. He’ll square off against world No. 133 Ger­ald Melzer of Aus­tria on Fri­day. On the women’s side, Mon­treal’s Fran­coise Abanda downed Beatriz Had­dad Maia of Brazil 7-6 (3), 6-3 to ad­vance to the fi­nal round of qual­i­fiers.
