Bouchard, polansky advance in qualifying

Eugenie Bouchard advanced to the final round of women’s qualifying at the U.S. Open, while fellow Canadian Peter Polansky moved a win away from the men’s main draw. Bouchard, from Westmount, Que., cruised past Georgia’s Ekaterine Gorgodze 6-1, 6-2 Thursday to close in on a berth in the final Grand Slam tournament of the year. Bouchard faces American Jamie Loeb Friday. Polansky, from Thornhill, Ont., beat Colombia’s Santiago Giraldo 7-6 (7), 6-4. Polansky faces American Donald Young on Friday. Montreal’s Felix Auger-Aliassime surged back from down a break in the opening set to beat American Christophe­r Eubanks 7-6 (5), 6-2. He’ll square off against world No. 133 Gerald Melzer of Austria on Friday. On the women’s side, Montreal’s Francoise Abanda downed Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil 7-6 (3), 6-3 to advance to the final round of qualifiers.
