STYLISH SINGLE-LEVEL LIVING
Berkshire bungalow has broad appeal
They’re back. Not that they ever really disappeared, but Prominent Homes has taken it upon itself to re-introduce the bungalow to the Calgary marketplace.
Bungalow living has always been a part of the veteran builder’s repertoire of models. This time around the appeal is aided by the fact they are more affordable — without sacrificing quality.
Take Prominent’s show home in the popular and successful community of Walden, for example, where the 1,150-square-foot Berkshire show home model is priced in the $590,000 range — a price tag that includes lot, GST, and basement development. The base model, measuring 1,093 square feet, starts at $473,000 with lot, GST, and basement development.
“One of the appealing factors with our bungalows is that people can buy a new home for under $500,000 at a time when the economy is still just regaining some lost ground,” says Prominent area sales manager Ed Dobrowolski.
Then there is the single-floor living element that has been a big factor in the sales to date and the ongoing interest from various age groups of consumers, he adds.
“We’re seeing everybody from single parents, young couples, to boomers and retirees, and they all like the idea of single-level living at an affordable price,” says Dobrowolski.
The Berkshire looks larger than it is, and that’s because it has 12foot vaulted ceilings throughout the main floor, is painted white, and has plenty of window space. Flat ceiling areas, including the spacious laundry area, are nine feet high. Engineered hardwood is the flooring of choice for the foyer, kitchen, dining area and great room. Carpeting is used in the bedrooms and tile in the baths.
The stylish and workable kitchen boasts an eight-foot by five-foot island that seats four and holds the dishwasher and double sink. It comes with built-in appliances and a roomy corner pantry, and plenty of cabinet and drawer space.
The adjoining great room has an elongated gas fireplace with 10foot mantel that is deep enough for a large TV. A door leads from here to the rear deck.
The home’s master suite area has a carpeted bedroom, and between that and the ensuite is a walk-in dressing room with shelving and drawers. The ensuite has tile on the floor and around the custom glass shower and deep soaker tub. The vanity has twin sinks.
The lower development includes a rec room with bar area, two bedrooms flanking a full bath with tub/shower, and utility/storage space. All windows on this level are above grade.
