EDMONTON A 19-year-old man is dead and two others are in critical condition after a fatal car crash on the Low Level Bridge Wednesday morning.

Police said the collision occurred around 2:30 a.m. when a northbound Chevy Malibu carrying three people struck the cement barrier just prior to entering the bridge and rolled into the metal beams, causing it to land on its roof.

The 19-year-old driver was pronounced dead on scene, police said. Two other people were rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police said one of the passengers is a 20-year-old man but they are still working to identify the third passenger.

Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the collision. No other vehicles were involved in the crash. The bridge reopened at about 12:30 p.m. after being closed to traffic throughout the morning.

The Edmonton Police Service major collision section is investigating. City engineers finished an initial visual inspection to the structure Wednesday morning and found some minor structural damage, deputy city manager Gord Cebryk said.

That damage will not affect the current use of the bridge, but will need to be repaired soon, Cebryk added.
