Interns chip-in at charity event

- BARB LIVINGSTONE

What did you do on your summer vacation?

For a trio of Mount Royal University students, the answer involves 78 sport legends, 1,200 volunteers, 40,000-plus spectators, a beautiful golf course and an awardwinning event on the seniors’ professional tour.

Kennedy Bozek, Troy Mack and Colleen Cory are summer interns for this year’s Shaw Charity Classic, running until Sunday at Canyon Meadows Golf & Country Club. They are assisting with everything from social media and marketing, to working with participating charities and helping volunteers and vendors.

For 21-year-old Bozek, a forward on Mount Royal’s Cougars women’s ice hockey team, the internship was an opportunity to gain experience in other sports and give her options upon graduation.

Taking a sports and recreation management degree, Bozek plans to get her masters in the field overseas, promote women’s hockey and would eventually like to coach — perhaps in the NHL.

Describing herself as “the worst golfer you have ever seen,” she says the Shaw Charity Classic experience has opened her eyes to other sports.

“I’ve learned a lot about the golf world; what goes on behind the scenes.”

Mack, 20, is going into the last year of his sports and recreation degree, with plans for law school and a dream of representing professional sports clients.

A casual golfer since the age of 14, he was kept busy as an operations and special events assistant before helping fulltime with build-out at the course.

“It was the calm before the storm and now we are completely busy in a hurry. I am enjoying every minute of it.”

Cory, 26, is getting a public relations degree at MRU, with a minor in sports and recreation. She hopes to combine the two for a future career.

She is assisting with social media, community involvement and sponsorship at the event. She is proud of what the tournament, which will be broadcast on the Golf Channel, does for charity and for Calgary.

“It showcases Calgary to the world. It is a great vision.”
