There’s no avoiding climate change

-

Re: “Heads in sand over climate change,” Letter, Aug. 27.

Ian Wishart indicates that the public, industry and government don’t realize that we have a climate problem, and he goes on to point out that various governments of Canada are not doing enough about our changing climate.

There is no shortage of people screaming about climate change and the fact that no one is doing enough to combat it. But there is a definite shortage of people who actually have any valid ideas about what can be done about it, other than the unrealistic idea that we should simply eliminate the oil and gas industry at once.

The belief of many that puny mankind can put a stop to climate change that has been going on in steady cycles for several billion years is ludicrous.

There have already been five major extinction events that we know of on our planet, and those who believe that man can prevent another one are the ones who do indeed have their heads in the sand.

That is not to say we should not do anything to try to minimize the effects of climate change, but, like it or not, climate change is here to stay and the best we can do is adapt and find new ways to survive in our changing world.
