Olympics depend on borrowed money

-

The year 1988 is not 2018. We know that. We were proud in 1988 and still are of the success the Winter Games brought.

We had stable, dependable governments then. Now, we have two governments that would have a tough time running a debt-free summer lemonade stand.

Finances the Olympics would receive from our governments would be borrowed money taken from the taxpayers over and over again.

Obviously, Calgary would be a standby, with Edmonton owning a 60,000-plus-seat stadium (opening ceremonies) and a plush building for hockey and curling.

How much of the Games would Calgarians see, and how would they feel about paying financial overruns, with Edmonton taking the better events?

Some local positive thinkers are expressing that everything will be OK and all will fall into place. We can’t be sure of that.
