NO CALL-UP FOR JAYS’ GUERRERO

- Steve Buffery/Postmedia

The Toronto Blue Jays announced their September call-ups Tuesday, but what everyone seemed to be talking about at Rogers Centre was the player they didn’t call up. Prospect Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was not included in the group of players recalled from triple-A Buffalo. MLB allows teams to expand their rosters in September from the regular 25-man squad to 40. The consensus No. 1 prospect in baseball, Guerrero owns a .381/.437/.636 slash line across four minor-league levels this season with 20 home runs and 29 doubles. Jays general manager Ross Atkins said Guerrero will play in the Arizona Fall League in October. Guerrero is 19 and by not bringing him up to the majors, the Jays gain additional service time on his contract to delay his free agency. In other moves, reliever Joe Biagini was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a left oblique strain retroactive to Saturday.
