Cornerstone leads way for new builds
Demand for new home construction in Calgary during the summer selling season was paced by communities located on the north end of the city.
The highest number of residential permit applications between June 1 and the end of August were from builders in four communities on the city’s north side, says the city’s planning and development department.
Northeast Calgary’s Cornerstone, which is by Anthem United and Walton Development and Management, was the only community in triple-digits for residential permits applications, filing 107 during this time.
“It is great to see the continued growth and interest in Cornerstone, especially in a tough economic environment,” says Megan Starke, marketing manager for Anthem United. “We were excited with the late spring push and are happy that it continued through what normally is quiet summer months.”
“It is exciting to see that the planning for Cornerstone is being recognized by buyers,” she adds. “A lot of effort was put into amenity planning and the product types for this multi-generational community. This includes the future wetland, access to a future LRT, the Major Activity Centre (MAC), and home styles that allow for secondary entries into the home.”
The builder group in Cornerstone includes Morrison Homes, Shane Homes, Truman Homes, Pacesetter by Sterling Homes, and Jayman Built.
Following Cornerstone in building permit applications between June 1 and the end of August were Livingston with 79, and Evanston and Carrington with 71 apiece.
The 519-hectare Livingston is by Brookfield Residential and straddles Centre Street, west of Deerfoot Trail, in north Calgary.
Evanston by Qualico Communities and Carrington are both located in northwest Calgary. Carrington is an area with multiple master-planned communities building within it, including one by Mattamy Homes and the other by Genstar Development Co.
The other communities with at least 40 by residential building permit applications over the past three months include 68 in the southeast lake community of Mahogany by Hopewell Residential, 46 in Saddle Ridge, and 40 from Legacy in southeast Calgary by WestCreek Developments.
Saddle Ridge is an established part of northeast Calgary that has master-planned communities by Genstar (Savanna in Saddle Ridge), and Genesis Land Development (Saddlestone) developing within it.
