A trap has been set and trails have been closed as the hunt continues for a bear spotted near the Glenmore Reservoir in the city’s southwest.

The bear was first spotted Friday morning, then again Sunday around 9:30 p.m. After a Fish and Wildlife officer attended the area, the bear took off into a nearby green space.

Monday morning, a black bear was spotted in the Weaselhead area at the west end of the reservoir — one that officials believe could be the same animal.

On Tuesday, officials said the bear was seen again earlier in the day, as well as Monday night, prompting them to set a trap and close local trails.

“As it does not appear to be leaving the area, we want to try to prevent it becoming habituated to garbage or other unnatural food sources,” said Brendan Cox, spokesman for Fish and Wildlife, adding that signage and tape have been put up in the area.

“To help ensure we are successful in safely relocating this bear, and for their own safety, we ask that members of the public respect the closure.”

Cox said at this time of year, bears are looking for any food they can get to fatten up for hibernation over winter.

“Residents should store garbage in bear-resistant and odour-proof containers or buildings,” said Cox.

“Pet owners should not leave pet food and feeders outside.”

Calgary police tweeted a warning to the public Sunday night to “avoid activities between Glenmore Landing and Heritage Park” due to the bear in the area.

Bear concerns and sightings can be reported to the Calgary Fish and Wildlife office at 403-297-6423 during business hours, or the 24hour Report A Poacher line at 1-800-642-3800.
