Free ticket snags cou­ple $1M lotto win

ED­MON­TON An Ed­mon­ton cou­ple scored a $1-mil­lion Lotto 6-49 jack­pot thanks to a free play on a pre­vi­ous draw.

Jeff Wood was in dis­be­lief when he checked his num­bers on the Aug. 4 guar­an­teed prize draw, said a news re­lease Fri­day. He checked the num­bers again and then tried to con­vince his part­ner, Ni­cole Hetu, of their new wealth.

“I was like, ‘OK. Yeah right, liar,’ ” re­calls Hetu. “He gave me the ticket when he got home, and I checked the num­bers over and over again. I prob­a­bly checked them 50 times be­fore I started to be­lieve it.”

Now that the re­al­ity of the win is set­ting in, the cou­ple is con­sid­er­ing a win­ter va­ca­tion.

“So far, we’re think­ing maybe Mex­ico or Cuba — some­where hot, for sure,” added Hetu.

“We’re also go­ing to plan for our fu­ture with a lit­tle more ease; we have some ex­tra breath­ing room in our fi­nanc­ing.”

Wood won the Lotto 6-49 free play on a pre­vi­ous draw, re­deem­ing it at the 118 Av­enue Su­per­food Store, 3637 118 Ave. The win­ning se­lec­tion was 21134637-01.
