Olympics bid was lowballed

Re: A big win or a big disappointment?; Lobby groups split on merits of Games, with public vote planned for November, Sept. 13

As has been suggested by many people commenting on Calgary’s plans to host the 2026 Winter Olympics, it was assumed that the host plan would include a new arena suitable for staging events. Rather than include the estimated $600 million needed to build a new arena, Calgary 2026 only included funds to update the Saddledome while leaving the door open to the city negotiating for a new facility. This is a blatant attempt by Calgary 2026 CEO Mary Moran to gain acceptance from Calgarians for a bid by using use a cost estimate that is lower than what the mayor and council may ultimately commit to paying.
