Take a peek at historic High River homes

- LORRAINE HJALTE

The Museum of the Highwood finds a place of heart and opens doors to privately-owned historic homes in High River.

“We are excited to present our 10th biennial historic homes tour,” says Irene Kerr, director and curator for the Museum of the Highwood. “With new and returning historic homes and locations on the tour, our place of heart is right here in High River. Curious about what is behind that door? Come and find out.”

Historic Homes Tour 2018 takes place Saturday. Tour tickets are $25 and are available online at www.museumofthehighwood.com or in person at the museum. The tour starts at the museum where visitors pick up their maps and guidebooks. The all-day, hop-on, hop-off shuttle bus is $10.

The celebration of the 10th biennial tour includes seven historic locations spanning 122 years of history. Presented for the first time on this tour is the Superman house, built in 1905, famous for being in the Superman III Man of Steel movie filmed in High River in 1983.

Visitors will also be able to view the On Location — Film in the Foothills exhibit at the museum before (or after) touring the homes.

Notable locations on the tour also include a rare opportunity to visit Maggie’s Diner, of Heartland fame, Town Farm built in 1896 along the Old Macleod Trail, and the Leitch house.

Setting the stage of bygone eras, River City Classics Car Club will feature a vintage car parked at each location. Listen closely for notes of music wafting through the locations as young musicians from the Highwood Lions Festival serenade visitors at the various locations from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m.

Enjoy lunch or tea service at the oldest historic church in town.

The Historic Homes Tour is the Museum of the Highwood’s only fundraiser. All proceeds support the museum’s ongoing collections restoration, exhibits and programs.
