Emmys offer stars a chance to dress up ... and address social issues

-

LOS A NGELES Some stars vamping on the arrivals carpet before the 70th Emmy Awards on Monday talked about politics and turned their politics into fashion statements.

Jenifer Lewis of Black-ish wore a sweatshirt adorned with a metalstudded Nike “swoosh,” pushing back against criticism of the brand for featuring former San Francisco 49ers Colin Kaepernick in its new ad campaign.

“I want to speak to the millennials today to let them know they are not alone when they speak out,” said Lewis.

“We are not living in dark times. We are living in awakening times, and I am proud to be one of the leaders in the movement.”

RuPaul, who earned an Emmy as host of RuPaul’s Drag Race, wore a double-breasted suit by Calvin Klein that was adorned with a few black Statues of Liberty.

“Every time I bat my false eyelashes I’m making a political statement,” RuPaul said.

Actress Q’orianka Kilcher of The Alienist accessorized her red dress with a pin that reads “I am a voter.”

“It’s important to send the message that all of our voices matter and all of our votes matter,” Kilcher said on the arrivals carpet, which traded traditional red for gold for the landmark 70th year.

For others, their fashion was statement enough.

Scarlett Johansson stunned as a goddess in white during the parade of fashion on TV’s biggest night.

Johansson’s gown featured drop sleeves with a plunging neckline and high side slit. She posed with her boyfriend and one of the evening’s co-hosts, Colin Jost, her blond bob swept back. The actress accessorized with diamond chandelier earrings, her flower back tattoos on display.

Tiffany Haddish was her own kind of goddess in a custom look by Prabal Gurung. She asked the designer to help her honour her father in the colours of the Eritrean flag and Gurung didn’t disappoint with a look of bright vertical stripes in red, yellow, blue and green.

The gown was reminiscent of the collection Gurung showed at the recent New York Fashion Week.

One of the evening ’s first stunners was worn by Angela Sarafyan of Westworld. She smiled, posed in a black strapless ball gown and said it best: “Sparkles!”
