TWO VIEWS ON MILK WOES

-

Re: Canada not the solution to dairy woes in Wisconsin; If anything, U.S. needs supply management, Opinion, Sept. 18

The myth put out by the milk monopoly in Canada that somehow U.S. milk is inferior is a blatant attempt at self-preservation. At the federal and state level there are high standards for dairy products. The nugget of misinformation that all U.S. milk is infused with hormones is false. The National Dairy Council of the U.S reports that 11 per cent of U.S. milk is laced with hormones.

Another bit of misinformation is that the U.S. subsidizes its dairy farmers. The U.S. government does not directly subsidize its dairy farms; it does provide common irrigation and sets a price for fodder.

The milk cartel in Canada doesn’t want to lose its privileged shelf at the grocery store. Jeffrey Anderson, Calgary
