Bravesone win away from NL East pennant

-

The Atlanta Braves moved to the brink of their first NL East title since 2013, with a five-run seventh inning carrying them past the Philadelphia Phillies 6-5 Friday night.

Ozzie Albies sparked the comeback at SunTrust Park in Atlanta with a two-run homer and Johan Camargo finished it off with a twoout, two-run single, giving the Baby Braves a chance to celebrate as soon as Saturday afternoon with one more victory over the secondplace Phillies.

In New York, CC Sabathia won for just the second time since the all-star break, Didi Gregorius and Aaron Hicks hit two-run homers as the Yankees built a six-run lead and beat the Baltimore Orioles 10-8 to close in on their second straight AL wild card.

New York lowered its magic number to two over Tampa Bay for ensuring a wild-card game on Oct. 3, most likely against Oakland. The Yankees began the night 1½ games ahead of the Athletics for home-field advantage.

In Houston, Yuli Gurriel hit a grand slam and a two-run homer on his way to a career-high seven RBIs and the Astros clinched a post-season berth by routing the Los Angeles Angels 11-3.

The Astros are still looking to secure the AL West title. The defending World Series champions began the day with a 3½-game lead over second-place Oakland.

Gurriel and his younger brother Lourdes Jr., who homered twice in the Toronto Blue Jays’ 11-3 loss to the Rays, became the first brothers in MLB history to have multihomer games on the same day.

In Chicago, the Cubs dropped their second straight game when Jose Quintana was tagged for a three-run homer by Kevan Smith, sending the crosstown White Sox to a 10-4 victory. The Cubs began the day with a 2½-game lead over Milwaukee in the NL Central.
