DEVELOPER’S DONATION ‘TRANFORMATIONAL’

Brookfield Residential becomes naming sponsor for new YMCA-operated recreation centre in Seton

- JOSH SKAPIN

The name of a large-scale recreation centre in southeast Calgary ’s mixed-use Seton community has been unveiled.

This facility, measuring about 330,000 square feet, will be called Brookfield Residential YMCA at Seton. The naming comes following a $3.5 million investment by Brookfield, the developer behind Seton, in YMCA Calgary, says a news release.

Set to open in 2019, the centre’s proposed amenities include, among other features, a water park, 10-lane competition pool, leisure pool, two multi-purpose ice rinks, three gymnasiums, fitness centre and full-service library.

Brookfield Residential, celebrating its 60th year of operations, also announced it will subsidize YMCA memberships for 60 children for one year. The aim is to help these children reach the recommended 60 minutes of exercise each day, says the release.

“One of Brookfield’s core values is community,” says Trent Edwards, COO for Brookfield Residential Alberta. “We believe if we can make a positive contribution to the well-being of community members, it will benefit future generations and in turn will benefit the communities we build.

“By partnering with YMCA, we can create unique opportunities that build better connections with residents and discover first-hand how to continuously improve community development,” he adds.

Shannon Doram, president and CEO of YMCA Calgary, calls Brookfield’s contribution a “transformational gift.”

“The Brookfield Residential team has really stepped up to ensure more Calgarians belong, grow, thrive and lead in this amazing new YMCA-operated facility,” she says. “It demonstrates the company’s commitment to community in a facility rich with amenities and opportunities for everyone.”
