6th and Tenth building harnesses Land of Horses

Stylized steel steeds flanking condo tower entrance sets development apart

A new landmark in Calgary captures the spirit of this prairie city’s heritage, providing a fitting entrance to a new condo development in the Beltline and anchoring a stylish corner plaza.

Land of Horses features a pair of 5.5 metre tall horses flanking the entrance to 6th and Tenth, a 224-suite condo building in the Beltline.

The 31-storey building marks the first foray into Alberta by Toronto’s Lamb Development Corp. Lamb has completed 19 developments, mostly in Ontario.

Renowned Chilean sculptor Francisco Gazitua won an international design competition for the commission.

His stylized forged steel horses are inspired by Andean horses, which have adapted to living in the high altitude plains and mountains. Calgary, next to the Rockies and on the plains, reminded Gazitua of his homeland.

The horses are tall enough to walk under and around, with nearby benches to sit on.

“I loved it so much, and we got along so well, he made me one of those,” Brad J. Lamb, owner of Lamb Development Corp., says of the sculptures. “I’m building a house in Toronto, and he made me a six-foot version of one of those to put in the front of my house for my own little Land of Horses. I think they’re beautiful.”

Lamb traded for between 40,000 and 50,000 square feet of extra density to create a public plaza, which wraps two sides of the building.

“I wanted to set the building back so when you walk by, there’s something interesting to look at,” he says. “We put in granite pavers, multi-coloured, so it’s a striped pattern. We wanted to do a big art installation that is going to be symbolic for the province, and this amazing water feature with Canadiana stones, reminiscent of the Canadian shield.”

6th and Tenth has a variety of condo styles available, starting from $269,900, including tax. Onebedroom units range in size from 449 to 534 square feet. One-bedroom and den units are from 615 to 669 square feet. Two-bedroom units are between 768 to 1,650 square feet, and two-bedroom and den units are from 941 to 1,950 square feet.

The design focus of these homes is the living space. Ceilings in principal rooms stretch to nine feet, and the windows run floor to ceiling. Sliding doors accessing individual balconies and kitchens are European efficient, lending more space to the great room.

6th and Tenth has a podium-top deck with splash pool and a warm and inviting party room and sky lounge.
