BD&P’s legal acumen unsurpassed in Calgary

- JOEL SCHLESINGER

Like the tall prairie grass, Calgary law firm Burnet, Duckworth and Palmer has deep roots in Alberta. Stretching back more than a century, the locally focused legal office has built a reputation among the city’s business community as a go-to firm for innovative, customized counsel.

“We’ve grown with the community, the economy and the industry that largely powers and has shaped Calgary — that being oil and gas,” says Alyson Goldman, partner at BD&P (Burnet, Duckworth & Palmer), which was founded in 1905 by a lawyer named Alec A. Ballachey.

Eventually expanding to include Frank L. Burnet in 1913, BD&P has continued to grow over the years into the leading Calgary law firm it is today.

Central to the success of the single-office firm of more than 120 lawyers is its on-the-ground, first-hand knowledge of the challenges faced by the businesses it serves.

“Our goal is to provide our clients with the best, most innovative legal solutions within our areas of expertise,” Goldman says.

Indeed, BD&P’s legal acumen in business, energy and litigation is unsurpassed in Calgary. For that matter, the firm has a stellar national and international reputation through its work for the city’s largest and most successful oil and gas companies, which now count themselves among the foremost players in the global energy sector.

More recently, seven of its partners have been recognized among the leading energy lawyers in the nation. And another 28 of its litigators and practitioners have been named among the best lawyers in Canada, period.

“It’s pretty impressive for a firm of our size,” Goldman says.

Besides providing counsel to facilitate billion-dollar mergers in the energy sector or successfully litigating on behalf of Fortune 500 firms in complex contract disputes, BD&P is committed to giving back.

That’s why it supports initiatives like the Calgary Homeless Foundation’s RESOLVE Campaign. As well, the firm is a big booster of the arts scene, including its well-received BD&P World Music Series, Goldman adds.

“Whether its working with local clients or giving back, we have a very big focus on our community.”
