The pit bull-cross that fatally mauled a woman in her Chestermere-area home as she tried to protect her two-year-old granddaughter was euthanized Wednesday.

The RCMP says it’s almost certain the animal’s owners consented to the destruction of the dog, named Jackson, which killed Lisa Lloyd, 50, at a home just east of Chestermere in the early evening of Sept. 15.

“The family has obviously given permission, given the short time that’s elapsed since the attack,” said Staff. Sgt. John Spaans.

The dog was being held at a Calgary Bylaw kennel for 10 days to determine if it had rabies.

It tested negative for any disease, said Spaans.

But if the family had opted not to euthanize the animal, RCMP would have turned to the courts to ensure it be done, he added.

“We thought it would have been in the interests of the public, we would have had the dog euthanized as a result of the nature of the attack,” said Spaans.

“There was no issue with the family.”

RCMP and family members said Jackson first turned on Lloyd’s granddaughter, Cali, inflicting non-life-threatening injuries to her limbs. In her efforts to defend the child, Lisa Lloyd was savagely mauled and died at the scene.

The girl has since been released from hospital, with a family member saying “her mom is putting so much focus on helping her recover from the trauma she’s been through.”

“Cali has been doing great.”

The family has obviously given permission, given the short time that’s elapsed since the attack.

Mounties say the family told them the dog had never caused problems before the attack.

A sign in front of the gated rural property warns of the presence of a guard dog, and some neighbours say they felt intimidated by the animal.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise funds to cover Lloyd’s funeral, which takes place Friday.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the campaign had raised just over $7,900 of its $10,000 goal.

Spaans said he’s not certain who’s now overseeing a second dog that had been quarantined from the same property.
