Censorship is not the right path
This Calgary Herald editorial decided correctly on contrasting and conflicting views on the news of this day and emotionally charged, evocative, issues such as the #MeToo movement and sexual assault and criminal consequences. They must be aired, reviewed and talked about, pro and con.
To write about one side of any fact-based issue or opinion and not the other is bias by definition, is unjustified and leads to a disingenuous, slippery slope of censorship as fomented by any partisan group.
As regards to Ms. Lakritz and her liked and disliked, opinion columns over past decades, her writing makes one think and ... is that not her point? Voltaire’s attributed statement, “I may not agree with (disapprove of ) what you say but, I will defend your right to say it,” should be respectfully/carefully considered to be a big part of any objective standard of response to public opinion and the fourth estate.
And thus, the Herald editorial board has made the responsible, fair decision of what to print under its banner, subject to the acquired weight of evidence, wisdom and history.
Censorship serves only special interests and is a path to absolutism that does not help or heal civilized society. Stewart Ford, Calgary
