What happens after recreational marijuana is legal?

- Sources: The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission, Calgary Police Service, RCMP.

After Oct. 17, adults in Alberta can legally buy cannabis flowers, seeds, oils capsules and prerolled joints;

Each household can also grow four plants;

Commercially made edible products will not be legal — although that will be reviewed in 2019 — but customers are allowed to bake with marijuana or make it into tea;

Adults can possess up to 30 grams of legally produced dried cannabis or the equivalent volume in other forms;

It’s still illegal to sell or give cannabis to anyone under 18 and penalties for doing so include a fine of up to $5 million or three years in jail;

Police in Calgary are considering whether to buy saliva-testing machines capable of determining whether a driver has consumed drugs. In the meantime, police across Canada will continue to use standard roadside sobriety tests, including asking drivers to walk a straight line or stand on one leg.
