Calgary Zoo recognized for high standards, sustainability efforts
The Calgary Zoo has been accredited by the Associations of Zoos and Aquariums for the 40th year in a row.
The association requires zoos and aquariums to complete the accreditation process every five years in order to remain members.
“We take accreditation very seriously,” Dr. Clément Lanthier, CEO of Calgary Zoo, said in a statement. “With the ever-rising standards in zoo operations, this designation provides us with an increased vigour to continue our critical conservation work which is aimed at protecting species-at-risk here in Canada and around the world.
The association’s president, Dan Ashe, described the Calgary Zoo as a world-class facility.
“The hundreds of millions of guests to AZA-accredited facili- ties, like the Calgary Zoo, can be assured their visit is supporting institutions that provide the highest quality animal care and are contributing to conservation initiatives that save animals from extinction.”
The zoo also earned a Green Award for its sustainability program, which includes compostable plastics and a new system for disposing waste on site.
