‘Gentle giants’ up for adoption

Edmonton Humane Society seeks one big loving home for St. Bernard trio

EDMONTON Three St. Bernard dogs up for adoption are in need of one large loving home, say Edmonton Humane Society staff.

Goliath, Gunther and Gasket — who arrived in Edmonton from another animal welfare agency and are believed to be about two years old — are bonded to one another and must be adopted as a unit. If separated, the dogs are highly anxious and attempt to escape in order to find one another.

“These three gentle giants have won over the hearts of staff and volunteers — even with the excessive drool,” said Jamey Blair, the Edmonton Humane Society’s (EHS) manager of animal health and protection.

“While their status as bonded pets creates a unique challenge to find a home that can care for all 350 pounds of them, we are confident that there is a family out there who will give these three dogs their second chance.

“We also wanted to ensure their welfare and given the outcome of their assessment, we could not put them through the stress of being separated,” she added.

The dogs, neutered and up for adoption Tuesday, arrived at the shelter a little lean but now each weigh in at around 115 pounds.

Welcoming the three loving brutes into any home will be no small matter, and the price tag will be hefty too, warns EHS.

The dog food alone will run a household roughly $300 a month. St. Bernards live an average of eight to 10 years and veterinary costs must be factored in too.

Edmonton bylaws allow only three dogs per home but Goliath,

We are confident that there is a family out there who will give these three dogs their second chance.

Gunther and Gasket do get along with other pooches. A home with older or no children and plenty of outdoor space is recommended.

Because the dogs require so much space, they are being kept out of the shelter’s public viewing area. Those looking to make the trio part of their family are asked to email adoptions@edmontonhumanesociety.com to schedule an appointment.
