ONE CHARGE AGAINST WEINSTEIN DROPPED
Manhattan’s district attorney dropped part of the criminal sexual assault case against Harvey Weinstein on Thursday after evidence emerged that a police detective had coached a witness to stay silent about evidence that cast doubt on the account of one of his three accusers.
The former movie mogul, 66, still faces charges over allegations that he raped an unidentified woman in his hotel room in 2013 and performed a forcible sex act on a different woman in 2006.
The tossed charge involves allegations made by Lucia Evans, a fledgling actor in 2004 when she says Weinstein asked for oral sex.
Prosecutors said in a letter unsealed Thursday that they learned weeks ago that a female friend who was with Evans the night she met Weinstein had given a detective a contradictory account of what happened.
Prosecutors said the police detective didn’t share the information with them and urged the woman not to reveal details, saying “less is more,” and that she had no obligation to co-operate with investigators.
