5 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT SENATOR WARREN

-

1 NATIVE HERITAGE

Elizabeth Warren, the Massachusetts senator who is expected to run for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020, released a DNA test Monday showing “strong evidence” she has American Indian heritage.

2 DNA ANALYSIS

Stanford University professor Carlos Bustamante, an expert in the field of DNA analysis, determined Warren has a pure Native American ancestor “in the range of six to 10 generations ago.” That could mean she’s just 1/512th Native American. Warren has long maintained that her great-greatgreat-grandmother, O.C. Sarah Smith, was at least partially Native American, making her 1/32nd Native.

3 ‘WHO CARES?’

Critics have charged that Warren advanced her career with the narrative she is a descendant of Cherokee and Delaware tribes. Donald Trump has repeatedly mocked her as “Pocahontas,” going so far as to offer $1 million to a charity of her choice last July if she took a DNA test that proved her claims. Asked about the DNA test Monday, Trump said: “Who cares?”

4 IS MOM A LIAR?

Warren’s Senate campaign produced a video posted on The Boston Globe’s website Monday in which she says: “The president likes to call my mom a liar. What do the facts say?” Bustamante replies: “The facts suggest that you absolutely have Native American ancestry in your pedigree.”

5 SEND A CHEQUE, MR. TRUMP

Warren posted a message on Twitter reminding Trump of his offer. She added: “Here’s the verdict. Please send the check to the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Centre.”
