‘discovery’ math path to failure

-

Re: Math course ‘crisis’ after 40% of Grade 9s flunk provincial tests, Oct. 19

My daughters are in Grades 11 and 8. I remember reading an article about six years ago about Ontario children in Grade 9 finding out they were at a Grade 6 level in math. This is when I discovered “discovery” math. The article also mentioned the U.S. was abandoning discovery math. Alberta was just beginning withit.

I marched to school, article in hand, and told my daughters’ teachers if they weren’t going to teach the times tables, I would.

My daughters always get top marks in math.

I honestly think some PhD in arts came up with discovery math thinking they would have done better if math were taughtthisway.
