An elderly man was rushed to hospital in life-threatening condition after being hit by a truck in the northwest on Thursday.

Police were called to the intersection of Trafford Drive and Trafford Place N.W. around 8:40 a.m. after the 70-year-old man was struck by an eastbound vehicle.

Acting Sgt. Chris Agren said the pedestrian was crossing Trafford Drive when he was struck.

While the cause of the collision is unknown, Agren said neither alcohol nor drugs appear to be a factor.

“We did speak to the driver but we haven’t gathered enough evidence to say (a cause),” he said. “The driver remained on scene, he was co-operative ... it’s looking like it was just an accident.”

Agren said police aren’t ruling out speed or a bright sun as contributing factors.

Evidence markers could be seen strewn across the intersection and members of the collision reconstruction unit were examining a truck parked nearby.

The accident comes after two children were killed by vehicles in the past 10 days.

Six-year-old Efua Isabel Ogbeide was laid to rest Tuesday after she was struck and killed by a CTrain near the Somerset-Bridlewood station on Oct. 15.

Last Friday, a three-year-old boy was killed after he was struck by a car in a “low-speed incident” on Valleyview Road N.E.
