Jurors in the trial of a former Strathmore man charged with murdering his ex-girlfriend will get an extra long weekend before hearing defence evidence next week.

Crown prosecutors Lori Chambers and Kim Sawa closed their case Thursday with evidence about the arrest of Glenn Randall just hours after the shooting death of Brenda Walker.

Defence lawyer Jennifer Ruttan then told the fivewoman, seven-man jury the case would have to be adjourned to next Tuesday.

At that time, the defence will call Randall to the witness stand ahead of an expert witness scheduled to testify on Wednesday.

Randall is charged with first-degree murder in the Jan. 6, 2015, shooting death of Walker, 49, in her Strathmore home.

Former RCMP Cpl. Sean Doornbos earlier testified Randall turned himself in to Mounties a short time after police found Walker’s bullet-ridden body on her kitchen floor.

Doornbos said he was able to reach Randall on his cellphone while he was driving on the Trans-Canada Highway.

In the call, Doornbos said he asked Randall if he was armed, and the accused said he “had the gun and he had a shotgun on his lap.”

Under cross-examination Thursday, Doornbos agreed with co-defence counsel Michael Bates there was nothing in the notes he wrote after the conversation indicating that exchange.

Doornbos also said Randall admitted “he had done a bad thing ” and had shot Walker in the torso three times, but didn’t know if he had fired any head shots.

Bates noted the former officer did have reference to that exchange in his notes, but not in direct quotes.

“You’re just relaying words to the effect?” the lawyer asked.

“Correct,” Doornbos said.
