Canada can’t fix climate alone
Our prime minister says the best way to tackle climate change is to put a price on pollution, which is in agreement with a Nobel Prize-winning economist. Therefore, “Starting next year, it will no longer be free to pollute anywhere in Canada.”
I understand the economic theory but am concerned we are not acknowledging this is a global issue. The unfortunate reality is that China, the U.S., India, the Middle East, Australia, Japan and many other countries contribute roughly 88 per cent of the carbon emissions and don’t have a price on carbon. Only the EU and Canada do.
So will Canada, with less than two per cent of global emissions be able to correct climate change? I don’t think so. Unless there is a global commitment to carbon pricing, we are simply shooting ourselves in the foot.
