MATHIS RECALLS DEATH OF PHOENIX
Actress Samantha Mathis has broken her silence about the night her boyfriend River Phoenix died 25 years ago.
Phoenix died at age 23 on Oct. 31, 1993 of a drug overdose on the street outside the famous Viper Club — partially owned then by actor Johnny Depp — in Los Angeles.
“I knew something was wrong that night, something I didn’t understand,” Mathis told Britain’s Guardian newspaper.
“I didn’t see anyone doing drugs, but he was high in a way that made me feel uncomfortable — I was in way over my head ... Forty-five minutes later, he was dead.
“I knew he was high that night, but the heroin that killed him didn’t happen until he was in the Viper Room,” Mathis said, who is best known for roles in American Psycho, Broken Arrow and Little Women.
“I have my suspicions about what was going on, but I didn’t see anything.”
