Police shut massive pot grow op valued at $1.3M

-

Police say a cannabis grow-op in northeast Calgary has been shut down.

On Friday, officers executed a search warrant under the new Cannabis Act at a home in the 100 block of Bedfield Court N.E.

Police say they found a largescale grow-op with more than 1,100 plants, with an estimated street value of more than $1.3 million.

They also found equipment with an estimated value of more than $20,000.

Staff Sgt. Kyle Grant of the Calgary police strategic enforcement unit said grow ops of this size “pose an immense risk to the health and welfare of the occupants and neighbours.”

Police say the home had electrical, HVAC, plumbing and structural alterations made to accommodate the grow-op. It has since been declared uninhabitable by Alberta Health Services and the City of Calgary.

“Homes that have alterations

made to their electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems pose an extreme fire hazard and we’ve seen the deadly consequences in our city before,” Grant said in a news release Monday.

Officers did not find anyone

when they searched the residence. The investigation is ongoing.

Police noted that under federal and provincial regulations, citizens are allowed to grow up to four cannabis plants per home.
