Two Calgary men have been arrested after shots were fired during a home invasion in Chestermere on Saturday.

RCMP responded to a report of a home invasion in the 100 block of East Chestermere Drive just before 7:45 a.m.

Police say one person entered the home in an attempt to steal firearms. That offender was confronted by somebody living in the home, prompting a “struggle” during which a gun was fired.

The offender fled the residence with four firearms and left in a waiting vehicle occupied by another person, according to RCMP.

Mounties co-ordinated with Calgary police to locate one suspect, who was arrested in Calgary on Sunday. Chestermere RCMP obtained a search warrant that evening for a home in Calgary, leading to the arrest of a second suspect.

One of the stolen guns was also recovered.

Zachary Haines-Matthews, 20, and Timothy Taylor, 21, have been charged following bail hearings.

Haines-Matthews faces charges of break and enter with intent to steal a firearm, four counts of theft under $5,000 and four counts of possession of a firearm in a vehicle. He was released on $1,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in Strathmore Provincial Court on Nov. 26.

Taylor faces more than 30 charges, including three counts of trafficking firearms, break and enter with intent to steal a firearm, assault with a weapon, pointing a firearm, use of a firearm in the commission of an offence and robbery.

He was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in Strathmore Provincial Court on Nov. 2.

RCMP said more charges are possible as the investigation continues.
