BMW unveils 8 Series convertible

Coupe model gets beefed up by 100 kg, can zip to 250 km/h before limiters kick in

Pictures of the brand new BMW 8 Series convertible have been leaked, giving us a complete look at the all-new drop top. Now BMW is releasing its own pictures and has given us some information to go along with them.

The convertible adds 100 kilograms to the coupe model and two-tenths of a second to the 0-100 kilometres per hour time. The new model is also able to hit 250 km/ h before electronic limiters kick in.

The new roof “pulls taut over the interior when closed” which BMW says offers superb sound insulation. Opening or closing happens with the push of a button and can be done in 15 seconds while the car is in motion up to 50 km/h. With the roof down, a wind deflector and optional neck warmer keep you comfortable.

Now that the 8 Series is a convertible, you’ll need a little more protection, and BMW provides it in the form of aluminum safety bars behind your head in case of a rollover. The sole engine option in North America is BMW’s twinturbo 4.4-litre V8, which makes a happy 526 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. It will also get to highway speeds in just 3.9 seconds. In Europe, buyers can choose the 840d model, which comes with a 3.0-L diesel engine.

The M850i xDrive Convertible will make its public debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show at the end of November, where we will hopefully learn pricing details and delivery dates.
