A REAL CROWD-PLEASER

Yorkville’s Onyx an elegant top seller

- MARTY HOPE

In a previous life it was called the Garnet. This time around, the model name has been changed to Onyx.

But regardless of the name, this 2,273-square-foot Georgian Colonial split-level show home by Mattamy Homes in the company ’s developing southwest community of Yorkville continues to be a crowd-pleaser.

“One of our best sellers,” Karla Schultz, Mattamy’s senior marketing manager says of the Onyx. “This model was based on one of our previous best sellers, the Garnet.”

And as its Georgian elevation would suggest, the Onyx is a large, elegant home that features with some unique, appealing design twists.

The hardwood foyer has a split stairway leading to the basement level and to the main living area. A powder room sits at the foyer’s upper landing which, in turn, leads to the kitchen and living room.

The roomy, workable kitchen has as its centrepiece the large pie-shaped granite-topped island that seats four.

It also holds double sinks, dishwasher, and doors and drawers for storage. One long wall holds loads of cabinetry and the corner walk-in pantry. The adjoining dining area opens onto the rear deck, while the living room has a fireplace with floor-to-ceiling tile facing.

Now comes one of the interesting features of the Onyx — a great room accessible via a stairway set opposite the powder room. With a fireplace similar to that in the living room, the added entertainment or family area has a railing separating it from the living room below as well as a door leading to a full-width front balcony over the front garage.

“The Onyx really fits a niche market of those who want a splitlevel home — some nostalgia with certain demographics in having a split-level — and the overall design-layout is fantastic and unique,” Schultz says.

Eight steps up from the great room is the private area of the home that includes two smaller bedrooms (one finished as an office), laundry with cabinetry, sink, a worktop, a coffee station, and the master suite. There is also a design option available that allows for a fourth bedroom on the upper floor.

The master suite has a large carpeted bedroom with walk-in closets, and a tiled ensuite with twin vanity sinks, large soaker tub with tiled surround, and a glass stall shower.

The home, Schultz says, is a good size for growing families or those who enjoy entertaining.

“Many buyers are those who are in life stages that involve children or planning to have them. The personalizing that can be done with the floor plan and the options available in our design studio really make this home more appealing than it already is,” she adds.
