GO DARK AT THE COFFEE COUNTER
Coffee can stop cognitive decline, says a new study, but one type of java in particular is the ruler of the roast.
Researchers from the Krembil Brain Institute in Toronto examined three types of coffee for a cluster of compounds called phenylindanes, which stops two proteins common in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s from thickening.
Of light, dark and decaffeinated dark roast, the dark roasts contained the most. And it didn’t seem to matter whether the coffee was caffeinated or not.
“It’s the first time anybody ’s investigated how phenylindanes interact with the proteins that are responsible for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s,” said Ross Mancini, a research fellow involved in the study, in a statement.
The study was published in the research journal Frontiers in Neuroscience last month.
