Karlsson talks style, suiting up and RW&CO.

- ALEESHA HARRIS aharris@postmedia.com

Erik Karlsson is no stranger to suiting up. From hockey uniforms to off-ice outfits, the former Ottawa Senators captain and current member of the San Jose Sharks has proven that he knows how to dress.

His sartorial skills made him the perfect partner for the Canadian brand RW&CO., following in the stylish footsteps of fellow NHLer P.K. Subban, who modelled for the brand (and even had his own menswear designs with the retailer) in 2015-16.

Karlsson chatted with Postmedia News about his sense of style, suits and how hockey has changed the way he dresses.

Q How did this collaboration come about?

A I’ve always loved fashion, so it was an easy decision when RW&CO. approached me. The fact that they’re a Canadian company with such a great reputation — it was a quick yes!

Q How would you describe your personal style?

A I’d like to say I see similarities between myself and David Beckham, one of my fashion icons. I tend to go for a combination of comfort and style. The fact that I’m Swedish — and we had a hockey player/fashion model like Henrik Lundqvist — really shaped my fashion perception during the first years I played in the NHL.

Q How has your style changed since you were younger — or since you started playing hockey?

A It’s changed a lot from when I started playing hockey; both my teammates and wife have influenced my ever-evolving fashion sense.

Q What do you look for in a suit? A The most important elements of a suit are fit and comfort. I was able to get both with RW&CO. — especially with the Traveler Suit. It’s everything important to my lifestyle in one outfit: breathable, wrinkle-resistant, shape recovering and stretchy.

Q Any fit tips you’ve learned throughout the past years as you’ve suited up for pre-games/ events?

A No socks in Southern states — you can imagine the heat; building off point one — never wear white socks; and tailored pants are essential to great style.
