Calgarians dislike taking handouts
This morning, in the aftermath of the vote, CBC interviewed University of Calgary Chancellor Deb Yedlin, who commented on what a missed opportunity the vote entailed. However, this was followed by Alex Pourbaix of Cenovus asking for OPEC-style cutbacks to boost our oil prices.
Both remarked that Alberta now has the lowest price per barrel for oil in the world, and how devastating this is to the provincial, and by extension, federal budgets. The Olympic budget promises from the provincial and federal levels seemed lukewarm at best.
My sense is the people of Calgary do not like to have to rely on government largesse. The rugged, self-reliant, cowboy spirit that is alive and well in this city came out and voted.
