Low-carb diets do shed pounds

- HENRY BODKIN and ANNE GULLAND

Low-carb diets allow people to lose more than 20 pounds over three years because they boost metabolism, a study suggests.

Scientists say the regimen may be best for long-term weight loss because it successfully overcomes the “bounce” that sees many dieters regain weight after a few weeks.

As weight is lost, the body typically adapts by slowing down metabolism and burning fewer calories, which often results in weight piling back on. However, in a study of 234 overweight adults conducted at Boston Children’s Hospital, researchers found that those adhering to a low-carb diet burned more calories than participants trying out alternative approaches.

David Ludwig, an endocrinologist who co-wrote the research, said: “A low-glycemic load, highfat diet might facilitate weight loss maintenance beyond the conventional focus on restricting energy intake and encouraging activity.”
