Re: “Fo­cus on needs rather than wants,” Let­ter, Nov. 19 It’s called Aus­ter­ity: a po­lit­i­cal-eco­nomic term re­fer­ring to poli­cies that aim to re­duce gov­ern­ment bud­get deficits through spend­ing cuts, re­duc­ing pub­lic ad­min­is­tra­tion, as well as pub­lic em­ploy­ment. Aus­ter­ity mea­sures are used by govern­ments that find it dif­fi­cult to pay their debts. Ev­i­dently, the word does not ex­ist in the par­lance of our govern­ments.
