Mounties in Red Deer make arrest after officer assaulted

A man accused of assaulting a police officer early Thursday is in the custody of Red Deer RCMP.

Police said they were called to a gas station in Red Deer around 3:45 a.m. Thursday after a reports of a man “disturbing the peace” at the establishm­ent.

Mounties say the man, who showed signs of being under the influence of drugs, assaulted an officer while resisting arrest.

The 34-year-old man was taken into custody with the help of additional officers who arrived on scene. Police say the assaulted officer did not suffer any serious injuries.

“A situation like this demonstrat­es the unpredicta­bility of people who have ingested unknown substances,” said Staff Sgt. Jeff McBeth with the Red Deer RCMP.

“Our members are trained to manage these incidents, and while we understand policing is dangerous, I am grateful our member was not seriously injured.”

Police said charges against the man are pending. His identity will not be released until charges are laid.
