Change of government needed

Re: Report warns of slow-moving fiscal disaster for Alberta, Nov. 22

The Trudeau government seems to have a quiet strategy to shut down the Alberta oilsands. Federal regulatory interference killed the approved Enbridge Northern Gateway project and changed the requirements of the TransCanada Energy East project after they filed their NEB regulatory application.

Failure of the government to fulfil its obligation to adequately consult with First Nations affected by Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline resulted in a Federal Court of Appeal ruling that’s left the NEB approval in legal limbo.

Bill C-69, currently before the Senate, was introduced to fix what the Liberals considered a flawed regulatory approval process. Oilsands producers and pipeline companies have concluded that a future pipeline could not be approved under Bill 69.

A change in government at next year’s election to a party capable of implementing a strategy to maximize the nation’s prosperity from its energy resources is the only solution to rectify the political existential threat to the energy sector.
